References in Pop-Culture

*In "The Simpsons" episode "Million Dollar Abie", "Grampa Simpson" is sent to a suicide doctor by the "Old Jewish Man". The doctors office is next to a Howard Johnsons. This is an allusion to the ethical suicide parlors being next to Howard Johnsons in this story.

*In the motion picture "Soylent Green", citizens of a vastly overcrowded New York City (including the character played by Edward G. Robinson) end their lives in ethically run suicide parlors.

Adaptations

*Showtime presented "Kurt Vonnegut's Monkey House," with an adaptation of this story in 1991.
