The school was established by Donald Grantham in
Southern California onJanuary 2 ,1951 , as the Grantham Radio License School. It began by offeringFederal Communications Commission license certification courses toWorld War II veterans. Shortly after its founding, the name of the school name was changed to Grantham School of Electronics. Over time, additional sites were established around the United States, includingWashington, DC ;Seattle, Washington ;Kansas City, Missouri ; andHollywood, Florida .Grantham developed distance education programs and as demand for distance education increased, it consolidated its residential campuses into one location just outside
New Orleans, Louisiana , in 1991. It began offering degree programs in the late 1990s exclusively online untilHurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast region in August 2005. Katrina destroyed over eighty percent of Grantham University’s buildings. Grantham University had been planning to open asatellite campus in Kansas City, Missouri and moved to Kansas City seven days after the hurricane hit.Grantham University is located on convert|30000|ft2|m2 in the Kansas City suburb of Zona Rosa.Total enrollment in 2006 was 9,000 (undergraduate and graduate) students. Grantham University’s Library Resource Center provides Grantham students 24/7 access to the full text of over 33,000 books and 2,500 journals.
