The IAS was founded together with the International Council of Scientific Development (ICSD) in 1980 by initiative of
Linus Pauling , SirJohn Kendrew , Lord Alexander Todd,Andrei Sakharov ,Konrad Lorenz andIlya Prigogine (President of the IAS until 2003) and many other well known scientists of contemporaneity. Linus Karl Pauling was the Honorary President of IAS till the end of his life.Headquarters of the IAS
Headquarters (The Presidium) of the IAS is located in the Castle Tratzberg,
Jenbach /Tyrol , (Austria ). Members of the Presidium (Honorary Presidents) of the Academy are the Nobel Prize Laureates:Jean Dausset (France),Johann Deisenhofer (Germany),Brian Josephson (UK),Jerome Karle (USA),Yuan T. Lee (China/USA),Heinrich Rohrer (Switzerland), and well-known scholarsYujiro Ikemi (Japan) andGeorg Kahn-Ackermann (Germany).Aims
The objective of the Academy is the promotion of basic and applied research and excellence in science which could lead to effective problem solving in the XXI Century. The general aims of ICSD and IAS are:
* to reinforce awareness of scientific responsibility;
* to increase the effectiveness of scientific research;
* to support a humanitarian approach to science;
* scientific cooperations between the industrialized and the developing countries;
* cooperations between scientists and political decision making bodies in the development and support of scientific research;
* integration of philosophical and ethical subjects into scientific education;
* to promote an optimal integration of scientific, public and political goals;
* to promote public scientific and political discussions on the role of science and future developments;
* to develop new international, trans- and interdisciplinary approaches.Members and Network
IAS unites about 1200 distinguished scientists and philosophers, politicians and public figures of the world. Among them there are 120 Nobel Prize laureates, more than 30 former and acting ministers and heads of state and members of 81 national academies.
The ICSD (International Council of Scientific Development)-IAS Network contains over 100 research institutions, National Academies of Sciences, Universities and research centers which as institutional members.
National Sections of the Academy were founded and active in:
Albania ,Austria ,Azerbaijan ,Brazil ,Bulgaria ,France ,Germany ,Greece ,India ,Japan ,Luxembourg ,Russia ,Slovakia , UK,USA , etc.Members (Full Members and Corresponding Members) of the International Academy of Science are elected (by the National Sections) in recognition of their distinguished achievements in original basic or applied research.
Election in the IAS is considered as one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist.
