St Fillans Dragon

The St Fillans dragon is a large painted rock situated just to the north of the A85 road between St Fillans and Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. It is something of a local landmark.

History


The rock has been painted to give the appearance of a dragon coming down the hillside. The rock was first painted when the Comrie, St Fillans & Lochearnhead Railway was in existence, sometime between 1905-1964. When the railway line was in existence, the rock would have been a few metres from the track. Now it is separated by a field from the A85 road. The rock has been repainted as the paint has faded over time. The artist's initials "LG" are visible on the rock.

Given the rock's location on an A class road in the central lowlands of Scotland, it is a well-known landmark by many drivers on this road. It can be seen North of the A85, roughly a quarter mile East of the St Fillans speed restriction zone.
