In 2004 Murphey ran in an open race for House District 31 and placed first in the six candidate Republican primary with 44% of the vote, with incumbent Dale Depue receiving 24% of the vote. Two years later, Murphey again defeated Depue and was the only Oklahoma Republican candidate that year to defeat a Republican incumbent in the 2006 party primary. 2008 Campaign
Murphey engaged a "down ballot campaign" to support to local Republican candidates. Murphey used his own campaign to launch a voter registration drive targeted at "hastening" the Republican tide in that already heavy partisan district that threatens to swamp local government officials with new electors to local office.
