- Pneumotaxic center
The pneumotaxic center, also known as the pontine respiratory group (PRG), is a network of neurons in the
rostral dorsal lateral pons . It consists of theKölliker-Fuse nucleus and themedial parabrachial nucleus . [cite journal|author=Song G, Yu Y, Poon C |title=Cytoarchitecture of pneumotaxic integration of respiratory and nonrespiratory information in the rat|journal=J Neurosci|volume=26|issue=1 |pages=300–10|year=2006 |pmid=16399700 |doi=10.1523/JNEUROSCI.3029-05.2006]Respiratory effects
The PRG antagonises the
apneustic center , cyclically inhibiting inspiration. The PRG limits the burst of action potentials in thephrenic nerve , effectively decreasing thetidal volume and regulating the respiratory rate. Absence of the PRG results in an increase in depth of respiration and a decrease in respiratory rate.External links
