Tanner has been voiced by three separate actors for each game: Bradley Lavelle in "Driver: You Are the Wheelman", Stefan Ashton Frank in "Driver 2", and Michael Madsen in "Driv3r" and "Driver Vegas".

Driver: You Are The Wheelman

Tanner first appeared in the 1999 video game "Driver: You Are the Wheelman", which takes place in the 1970s. Back then, he was working as a NYPD detective. The storyline was based in Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City. Tanner was put undercover due to his remarkable driving skills (he was an ex-racing driver) and was ordered to bring down an auto theft syndicate that was headed by a kingpin named Castaldi. By the end of the mission, he is put to the task to kill the President; but Tanner refuses and foils the entire operation, eventually bringing down Castaldi.

Driver 2: The Wheelman is Back

Also referred to as "Back on the Streets" in other countries

Tanner and his partner, Detective Tobias Jones, are put with the Chicago Police Department to find a man named Pink Lenny, who was nearly killed by two hitmen at a bar; Lenny was the only person to survive the shooting. Solomon Caine is revealed to be the one who wants Lenny captured. Lenny is said to have been an accountant for Solomon Caine, but screwed him over and started working for his rival gangster Alvaro Vasquez, who is never identified. Throughout the game, Tanner escapes the villains and gets information but never apprehends Jericho, Caine nor Vasquez. He does catch Lenny and turns him over to the authorities. Tanner remarks to his chief, when he is asked what happened to Vasquez and Caine, that they were back where they started, after which a cutscene ensues showing Vasquez and Caine shaking hands in Rio de Janeiro.

DRIV3R

Tanner is put back into the undercover world working for the FBI in Miami. He is assigned to go undercover as a driver for an auto theft ring called South Beach that stretches through Miami, Nice and Istanbul. Tanner's main focus in this game is apprehending his nemesis Jericho, who killed Solomon Caine and took over his operation, and apprehending the whole of South Beach. In the final showdown between Tanner and Jericho, both men are presumably mortally wounded.Tanner then goes to shoot Jericho, but decides not to, being a good guy. Unluckily for Tanner, Jericho pulls out a gun and shoots him as he is walking away. It then skips to the emergency room where Tanner is trying to be recovered, it remains unknown weather Tanner, Jericho or both flat line at the end.

However he does seek revenge on jericho in the mobile sequel, Driver Vegas.

Driver : Parallel Lines

There are several references to him in Driver: Parallel Lines. In the mission Bear Cage, Tanner had an office in the NYPD police Station. Also the Corrigan character seems to be based on him. Also graffiti on TK's safehouse wall says: Tanner Lives and I love Tanner. However [http://www.driver-4.com/driver-4-or-driver-5.php this picture] tells us that we may see Tanner in Driver 4, the upcoming Driver game.

Driver Vegas

Tanner's ultimate is uncertain, however; There are slight clues that lead the player to believe Tanner may still be alive. In "Driv3r", it is unknown who actually dies. In the mobile phone sequel (set in Las Vegas), Tanner awakens in the Istanbul hospital and takes off after Jericho.

However, it's must be noted that this game is called as a spin-off of the series by many fans.

Driver: Working Title

Tanner's fate still unknown, so it's uncertain if he will return or that he will be replaced by a new protagonist. But some [http://www.driver-4.com/driver-4-or-driver-5.php clues in Driver: Parallel Lines] let us think that Tanner will probably be present in the next Driver game.

Driver: LA Undercover

A Younger Tanner is the protagonist of Driver: LA Undercover. The game was relased for mobile. He is up against the Don of the LA Mafia

Tanner's firearms

Tanner's official firearm has been argued among fans, however the weapon that most fans have agreed on was the weapon seen in "Driver 2", which was the Beretta 92 ; this weapon was, however, altered in "Driv3r" and has resemblance to a Nickel plated version of the Heckler & Koch USP.

Tanner's cars

Tanner's official car has also varied, but the common thing is that it's a dark gray late-60's muscle car, usually with a white stripe. In "Driver", it was a 1965 Mustang coupe, but it looked like a Buick GSX in game. For "Driver 2", Tanner drove an Oldsmobile 442, and for "Driv3r", Tanner once again drove a Mustang, this time a 1969 Boss Mustang.

Tanner and "Grand Theft Auto"

Tanner has been referenced in "Grand Theft Auto 3", ', and '. In "Grand Theft Auto 3", he played the role of an undercover cop. Asuka describes him as "Strangely animated" and "Useless out of his car." He was even given a female walking animation. In "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City", an undercover criminal is named Dick Tanner, another reference to Tanner. In "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas", one of Madd Dogg's bodyguards is seen playing "Driv3r" and is making the remark, "Tanner, you suck ass!".
