Tanner first appeared in the
1999 video game "Driver: You Are the Wheelman", which takes place in the 1970s. Back then, he was working as aNYPD detective. The storyline was based inMiami ,San Francisco ,Los Angeles , andNew York City . Tanner was put undercover due to his remarkable driving skills (he was an ex-racing driver) and was ordered to bring down an auto theft syndicate that was headed by a kingpin named Castaldi. By the end of the mission, he is put to the task to kill the President; but Tanner refuses and foils the entire operation, eventually bringing down Castaldi.Driver 2: The Wheelman is Back

Tanner and his partner,
Detective Tobias Jones , are put with theChicago Police Department to find a man named Pink Lenny, who was nearly killed by two hitmen at a bar; Lenny was the only person to survive the shooting. Solomon Caine is revealed to be the one who wants Lenny captured. Lenny is said to have been an accountant for Solomon Caine, but screwed him over and started working for his rival gangster Alvaro Vasquez, who is never identified. Throughout the game, Tanner escapes the villains and gets information but never apprehends Jericho, Caine nor Vasquez. He does catch Lenny and turns him over to the authorities. Tanner remarks to his chief, when he is asked what happened to Vasquez and Caine, that they were back where they started, after which a cutscene ensues showing Vasquez and Caine shaking hands inRio de Janeiro .DRIV3R
Tanner is put back into the undercover world working for the
FBI in Miami. He is assigned to go undercover as a driver for an auto theft ring called South Beach that stretches throughMiami , Nice andIstanbul . Tanner's main focus in this game is apprehending his nemesis Jericho, who killed Solomon Caine and took over his operation, and apprehending the whole of South Beach. In the final showdown between Tanner and Jericho, both men are presumably mortally wounded.Tanner then goes to shoot Jericho, but decides not to, being a good guy. Unluckily for Tanner, Jericho pulls out a gun and shoots him as he is walking away. It then skips to the emergency room where Tanner is trying to be recovered, it remains unknown weather Tanner, Jericho or both flat line at the end.However he does seek revenge on jericho in the mobile sequel, Driver Vegas.
Driver : Parallel Lines
There are several references to him in Driver: Parallel Lines. In the mission Bear Cage, Tanner had an office in the NYPD police Station. Also the Corrigan character seems to be based on him. Also graffiti on TK's safehouse wall says: Tanner Lives and I love Tanner.However [http://www.driver-4.com/driver-4-or-driver-5.php this picture] tells us that we may see Tanner in Driver 4, the upcoming Driver game.
Driver Vegas
Tanner's ultimate is uncertain, however; There are slight clues that lead the player to believe Tanner may still be alive. In "Driv3r", it is unknown who actually dies. In the mobile phone sequel (set in Las Vegas), Tanner awakens in the Istanbul hospital and takes off after Jericho.
However, it's must be noted that this game is called as a spin-off of the series by many fans.

He was even given a female walking animation. In "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City", an undercover criminal is named Dick Tanner, another reference to Tanner.
