German submarine U-218

Unterseeboot 218 or U-218 was a German World War II Type VIID submarine commissioned on 24 January 1942. She served with the 5. Unterseebootflottille (U-Boat Flotilla), a training unit, 9. Unterseebootflottille from 1 September 1942 to 30 September 1944, 8. Unterseebootflottille, a training unit and finally with 11. Unterseebootflottille from 1 March 1945 to 8 May 1945.

U-218 completed 10 patrols (mostly mine-laying) sinking two ships totalling GRT|552|metric|first=yes, damaged two ships (including one tanker) totalling GRT|14,538|metric, and damaged one auxiliary warship totalling GRT|7,117|metric. U-218 is also responsible for sinking the last British ship to be sunk as the result of World War II. The steam fishing vessel "Kurd" was sunk on 10 July 1945 after hitting a mine laid by U-218 in August 1944 off Lizard Head.

U-218 was damaged on her fifth patrol by an RAF Wellington bomber. U-218 surrendered in Bergen, Norway on 8 May 1945, and sank while under tow to the scuttling grounds of Operation Deadlight on 4 December 1945.
