Heimssýn

Heimssýn, the cross-political organisation of Icelandic Eurosceptics, was founded in June 2002. The organisation is opposed to Icelandic membership of the European Union. According to its website the objective of the organisation is to "motivate open debate about European and international cooperation". An address which more than one hundred founding members signed after the founding of the organisation in 2002 was as following:

"The Icelandic people have in less than a century established themselves as an independent nation with dynamic economy and cultural life where the welfare of the citizens is secured. A unique success of a nation, not counting many people, would be impossible without the vitality which consists in the independence. We the undesigned accentuate the importance of friendly relations and vast cooperation with other nations of Europe and the entire world. However, we do not believe that it reconciles with the interests of the Icelandic people to become members of the European Union. We motivate open debate about European and international cooperation on these grounds and have founded an organisation called Heimssýn, the cross-political organisation of Icelandic Eurosceptics." Ragnar Arnalds, former MP and Minister of Finance, has served as chairman of the organisation from its foundation. At its annual general meeting in June 2007 Arnalds was re-elected in office. Sigurður Kári Kristjánsson, MP, was also re-elected as vice-chairman. Director of Heimssýn is Hjörtur J. Guðmundsson.
