Elizabeth Bay House is a historic home in the suburb of Elizabeth Bay in
Sydney ,New South Wales ,Australia . Built between 1835 and 1839, Elizabeth Bay House was known as 'the finest house in the colony'. Elizabeth Bay House is a 19th century Regency style home originally surrounded by a 54 acre garden but now situated within a densely populated inner city suburb. It is managed by theHistoric Houses Trust of New South Wales as amuseum that is open to the public for a modest fee.Elizabeth Bay House is a superb example of Australian colonial architecture.
History
Elizabeth Bay House was designed by the accomplished architect,
John Verge (1788–1861), for the Colonial Secretary,Alexander Macleay (1767-1848) and built between 1835 and 1839.Elegantly furnished to the period of 1839–1845, the interiors reflect the lifestyle of the Macleays presenting an evocative picture of 19th century Sydney life.
