IAAF World Athletics Final
- IAAF World Athletics Final
The IAAF World Athletics Final was inaugurated in 2003 to replace the IAAF Grand Prix Final.
The former Grand Prix Final never had consistency of events included whereas the hope of the World Final is to keep to a consistent program of 35 events.
The top seven performing athletes over the last season, at IAAF Golden League events in each discipline up to 800 m., and top eleven in events 1500 m. and over, will qualify for the final which is held over two days.
There is also a wild card that the IAAF can use to invite up to five athletes who they deem to warrant a place but could not gain the necessary ranking due to injury or other circumstances.
The first event held in Monaco was slightly ill-conceived in that the stadium chosen was not big enough to hold the hammer throw competition which was instead held in Szombathely, Hungary at the Stadion Rohonci Út a week earlier.
All competitors will receive prize money rising from US$1,000 for the 9th - 12th placed athletes in the longer distance races to US$30,000 for the winner in each event. A further US$100,000 will be awarded to any athlete breaking a world record.
