Rainton is a village in the Harrogate borough of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated about 6 miles north of Boroughbridge, 5 miles north-east of Ripon and 5 miles south-west of Thirsk. It is a picturesque village with a village green and a maypole. There are approximately 120 houses in Rainton including several listed buildings, the oldest being a medieval dovecote. Rainton used to be a predominantly agricultural village but in the last ten years its fortunes have changed and it is now a fashionable commuter village, largely due to its close proximity to the A1 road. The village school is based at Baldersby St James and the highly sought after Queen Mary's School is situated just outside the village on the Topcliffe road. The Cathedral Choir School is based in nearby Ripon. There are two free houses in the village: the "Bay Horse Inn" and "The Lamb". They are traditional village pubs. Also about a mile to the east of Rainton is a small village named Asenby where there is a famous seafood restaurant, The Crab and Lobster. There is a recreation field including a children's park which is financed totally through fundraising. One such fundraising event is the celebration of Robert Burns which is held in the village hall and is always a sell-out every year. There is a Methodist chapel in Rainton. North of Rainton is a village named Baldersby St James where there is a church with a 'landmark' steeple.
