North Yorkshire ,England . It is situated about 6 miles north ofBoroughbridge , 5 miles north-east ofRipon and 5 miles south-west ofThirsk . It is a picturesque village with a village green and amaypole . There are approximately 120 houses in Rainton including several listed buildings, the oldest being a medievaldovecote . Rainton used to be a predominantly agricultural village but in the last ten years its fortunes have changed and it is now a fashionable commuter village, largely due to its close proximity to the A1 road. The village school is based atBaldersby St James and the highly sought afterQueen Mary's School is situated just outside the village on the Topcliffe road. TheCathedral Choir School is based in nearbyRipon . There are two free houses in the village: the "Bay Horse Inn" and "The Lamb". They are traditional village pubs. Also about a mile to the east of Rainton is a small village namedAsenby where there is a famous seafood restaurant, The Crab and Lobster. There is a recreation field including a children's park which is financed totally through fundraising. One such fundraising event is the celebration ofRobert Burns which is held in the village hall and is always a sell-out every year. There is a Methodist chapel in Rainton. North of Rainton is a village named Baldersby St James where there is a church with a 'landmark' steeple.
