Timothy Freke

Timothy Freke is an British writer and spiritualist who has written several books on world mysticism. He has co-authored several books with Peter Gandy, including "The Jesus Mysteries" which was a top 10 best-seller in the UK and USA, an Amazon.com 'surprise best-seller', and a 'Book of the Year' in "The Daily Telegraph".Fact|date=January 2007 Freke's book "Jesus and the Lost Goddess" has been cited by Dan Brown, author of The Da Vinci Code, as an inspiration for his best-seller.Fact|date=January 2007 Recently he was interviewed for the History Channel documentary "Beyond The Da Vinci Code" and has been the focus of "Modern Mystics" on the BBC World Service and "Beyond Belief" on BBC Radio 4.Fact|date=January 2007

Freke's recent work, "The Laughing Jesus: Religious Lies and Gnostic Wisdom", again co-authored with Peter Gandy, is a critique of religious literalism and affirms mystical spirituality. This book follows on from "The Jesus Mysteries" which is an examination of the evidence for a historical Jesus and parallels Paganism with early Christianity. Although backed up by scholarly research, Freke and Gandy's works are written to be accessible for a popular audience.Fact|date=June 2007

Freke and Gandy's latest book "The Gospel of the Second Coming" is a departure from their usual academic style of writing, instead focussing on humour derived from Jesus, upon his resurrection, correcting the misunderstandings that have arisen since his first coming.

Freke has written on Gnosticism, the ancient religious movement. However, Freke also uses the term to describe his mystical approach, contrasted with literalism, which he defines as rigid dogmatic religious belief and criticises as a dangerous force in today's world.Fact|date=January 2007
