Hexacorallia (also known as Zoantharia) is a subclass of the class Anthozoa within the phylum Cnidaria. It can be distinguished from the other anthozoan subclass (Octocorallia) by the number of tentacles each polyp possess (often a multiple of 6, but not always, never 8). On the opposite to most octocorals, the tentacles are never pennate. It includes the sea anemones and most existing corals (except for the soft corals in order Alcyonacea of the sister subclass Alcyonaria, the Octocorallia). It also includes the significant extinct orders of the rugose corals and tabulate corals
