Galaxy 105 is the largest regional British radio station [http://www.rajar.co.uk] outside of London. It is owned by the Global Radio UK and is part of its Galaxy Network of stations which specialize in dance music and R&B. It started life under the name of Kiss 105, named after the successful London based Kiss 100. The studios are at Josephs Well near Park Lane in Leeds.

Kiss 105 was launched - after the success of its sister station - on Valentine's Day in 1997.

A total of four transmitters were used to cover the whole of Yorkshire. North Humberside was served by a frequency of 105.8 MHz, Sheffield by 105.6 MHz, Bradford by 105.6 MHz and Yorkshire in general by 105.1 MHz. The studios were based at Joseph's Well, Hanover Walk, Park Lane in Leeds, West Yorkshire - those now used by Galaxy Yorkshire. Some of the programmes were shared with the Manchester station.

Noteable DJ/Presenters since launch

It broadcasts on 105.8 MHz FM at a power of 9.6 kW from High Hunsley, which covers East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire and on 105.1 MHz FM at a power of 2.4 kW from Emley Moor, which covers West Yorkshire. It also has two filler transmitters, both on 105.6 MHz FM, one from Idle at 0.5 kW which covers Bradford and the other from Tapton Hill at 0.24 kW covering Sheffield.

DAB broadcasts are on the MXR 12A Yorkshire region multiplex from nine transmitters, with the strongest signal from Emley Moor, and other DAB signals from Belmont, Bilsdale, Acklam Wold (North Yorkshire), and Tapton Hill.

The station changed its name in 2006 and was referred to as Galaxy Yorkshire, but since mid 2008 it has reverted to Galaxy 105. A new strapline of "passion for music, passion for life", and a new target demographic from 15-29 to 15-34 was also introduced. fact|date=October 2007 This has been reinforced by the playing of more old school "Galaxy Anthems" - similar to Emap rival Kiss's "Kisstory".

Chrysalis radio sold

On 25 June 2007 it was announced that Chrysalis Radio, including the Galaxy Network, along with its sister stations The Arrow, LBC and Heart, were to be sold for £170 million to Global Radio UK by owners Chrysalis Group.

Discography

Galaxy recently released the three disk box set "Galaxy Dance Anthems" featuring 50 "club classics".
