Emma Biggs

Emma Biggs (born 1956) is a London-based mosaicist and author of a number of standard texbooks on contemporary mosaic practice. She paints with her husband Matthew Collings. She has written "Mosaic Techniques" (Cassell, 2003) and several other books co-authored with Tessa Hunkin, with whom she founded the London-based Mosaic Workshop in 1988. Mosaic Workshop have been responsible for a number of high profile commissions including recent work by Tessa Hunkin in St Joseph's Chapel at Westminster Cathedral. She is a regular tutor of short courses in mosaic art at West Dean College, the study centre of the Edward James Foundation.

As a fine artist Emma Biggs paints abstract paintings collaboratively with her husband Matthew Collings, dealing with subtle colour relationships, and she is currently engaged in a large public mosaic project - Made in England. The couple's paintings are about muted colour contrasted with vibrant colour -- dark versus light at some points, elsewhere a tonal similarity. Plus it’s all done with a painterly application, so there is a constant play within the geometric divisions of broken, slightly scrubby surfaces contrasted with flatter ones.
