Steven Knapp is the current President of
The George Washington University , having assumed the position at midnight onAugust 1 ,2007 . He is the 16th president of the university, succeedingStephen Joel Trachtenberg . Previously, he was a professor provost atJohns Hopkins University since 1996 and dean of the School of Arts and Sciences from 1994 to 1996. Yale University . He did his graduate work atCornell University , earning hisMaster's degree in 1977 and hisdoctorate in 1981. He served for 16 years on the faculty ofUniversity of California, Berkeley as a a specialist in 18th and 19th century English literature and in literary theory, before coming to Johns Hopkins in 1994.
