Athletics

West Holmes has a great tradition in sports. West Holmes offers 15 OHSAA sports to its students. Although recently, due to failed levys, all sports have become "Pay-to-Play." Meaning that if students wish to participate in athletics, they must first pay to offset costs for travel and other expenses.

Brief Summary of 2007-2008
In football WH went 5-5 with key wins over Orrville and rival Triway. Head football coach is former player coach Tom Eastep. Volleyball is one thing WH is known for by the state they have been to state 6 times and 3 times in a row but never bringing home a state crown. Head volleyball coach at WH is coach Jim Park. West Holmes also plays soccer, WH is not known for soccer but we have a team that hates losing and plays hard every night. The Head coach at WH is coach Paul Money. WH also has a girls soccer team and they have struggled in years past and has just got rid of former head coach Mr. Ramon Valenzuela and has hired former boys JV soccer coach Coach Josh Wengerd. Tennis is strong as a sport at WH for girls and the head coach for out girls Tennis team is coach Jason Otto. Next is cross country and WH had key players this year that went far and had an excellent coaching staff coach Jeremy Gessner just resigned to coach a different sport at WH and the new face is a young teacher at WH coach Kevin Beachy. Next is golf and we have very good young Athletes for golf and has a very experienced coach that knows every trick in the book coach Bruce Martin. Now winter is an amazing time because the Dungeon (gym name) is always packed for girls and boys basketball. Boys basketball has had their moments but the past 2 years has gone down but last year bounced back with impressive wins over Orrville and Ashland and almost broke a record beating Mansfield Senior. The head man is coach Kelly Seboe. Girls basketball has had so many times up have hold the longest winning streak record and 108 games straight won and legend coach Jack Van Reeth also winning 3 championships in a row. WH did make it to the regionals 3 straight years with Matt Voll as the head man but he resigned to coach else where and this year our girls had an amazing year going undefeated in the OCC and going to the regionals with 2 year head coach former play under Jack Van Reeth and has 2 of the 3 championship ring coach Lisa Patterson.Shane Ridenbaugh, Lisa Cline, Susan McDowell, Nikki McCulloch, Carie Wells, Kris Pipes, Lee Ann Myers, Jenny Snow, Michele Wanat, Kia Sprang, Tricia Wright, and Beth Bauer were also part of the 108 games in a row winning streak. Next is WH wrestling and the past 4 years we have brought a championship back to Holmes county. Colt Sponseller brought 3 in a row and this year heavy-weight Tyler Hawkins brought a championship back home. The head coach is former famous Triway wrestler Jeff Woods. WH has an excellent cheerleading squad and the head coach their is coach Kimberly Murphy. Baseball had a fantastic year going second in the OCC and going to the sweet 16 and with 1st year head coach Ben Holt. Softball has had their bad years but this year was full of excitement losing in the 1st round of the tourney still had a nice year the coach of WH softball team is coach Jaime Chenevey. Boys Tennis is strong and is well sounded in everything they do. Head coach is Jason Otto. Track has always found a way to pop up some awesome runners or jumpers.
