History

The current Hoboken High School was built in the mid-1960s. Prior to that time, A.J. Demarest High School, dedicated in the autumn of 1911, served as the city's high school. [ [http://www.hobokenmuseum.org/this%20month%20in%20hoboken%20history/october_in_hoboken_history.htm October in Hoboken History ] ] When the current high school was built, Demarest became a Jr. High School (grades 8-9), and is currently one of two middle schools in the district. The first principal of Hoboken HS was Tom Gaynor - Boys were required to wear button down shirts with ties and a jacket or sweater - long hair was frowned on by Mr. Gaynor.

In 1997, one of the school's history teachers, John A. Sacci, was shot and killed by Geraisimov Metaxas, who then shot and killed himself. [Goodnough, Abby.
