Jech v. Burch

Jech v. Burch

Jech v. Burch, 466 F.Supp. 714 (D. Haw. 1979), was a United States federal district court case that in its ruling affirmed the constitutional and historical validity of common law name changes.

The case was started when the parents of a newborn child gave the child a last name different from their own. A friend of the parents did not think this was right and sued over it. The Court affirmed the parents' common law right to choose any name they wished.

The decision was made in the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii.
