Edgar Johnston

Edgar Charles Johnston DFC (30 April 1896 – 22 May 1988) was an Australian fighter pilot and ace of World War I. He shot down 20 German aircraft between his entry into the war in 1917 and the war's end in 1918, making him the 5th highest-scoring Australian pilot of the war. He flew with the 24 Squadron of the RFC early in his career, and later transferred to the 88 Squadron. He flew mostly in Bristol Fighters. In late 1918, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for a particularly brave patrol in which he defeated two superior German flights. After the war, Johnston became Assistant Director General of the Department of Civil Aviation in Australia, and later took up a post with Qantas until his retirement in 1967.
