In 1930, three years after Louis' first exhibition, Uhde stopped buying her paintings as a result of the Great Depression. Louis was admitted to the psychiatric ward of a geriatric hospital, and, although Uhde reported that she had died in 1934, Louis actually survived until 1942, friendless and alone.
