Knighton, Leicestershire

Knighton, Leicestershire

Knighton is an area of Leicester, situated roughly between Clarendon Park to the north, Stoneygate and South Knighton to the east, Wigston to the south and Saffron Lane estate to the west. It is a residential area, greatly expanded in the 1930s and 1940s with red-brick semi-detached houses.

Originally a separate village a couple of miles from Leicester city centre it became joined to it by the area known as Clarendon Park during the Victorian period due to the demand for housing for those newly employed in industry. It still, though, maintains many of the village's original features, such as Oram Cottage [http://www.benravilious.com/photo.asp?photo_id=20040424_CRW_1353] , centred around the church of St. Mary Magdalene [http://www.le.ac.uk/pc/amjy1/ULSCR/ULSCR2.html] and therefore it has become a conservation zone. The village as a suburb expanded with housing estates of the mid twentieth century of West Knighton and South Knighton appearing with a typical mix of housing for the post war era.
