26 January 1932 ) was the only son ofPrince Fushimi Hiroyoshi (1900-1937) and heir apparent to theFushimi-no-miya shinnōke branch of the Imperial Family). Fushimi Hiroaki was born inTokyo , and educated at theGakushuin . His father, Prince Fushimi Hiroyoshi, a naval commander, sustained mortal wounds in the opening stages of theBattle of Shanghai in 1937. Prince Hiroaki, therefore, became the twenty-fourth head of the Fushimi-no-miya upon the death of grandfather,Prince Fushimi Hiroyasu , on16 August 1946 .With the abolition of the collateral branches of the Imperial household by the American occupation authorities after the end of the
Pacific War , he became a commoner on14 October 1947 . He later traveled to theUnited States and attendedCentre College inKentucky . He returned to Japan to pursue a career withMobil Oil .His late wife, the former Yoshikawa Tokiko, was the daughter of the president of
Yoshikawa Optical Instruments . He has three daughters: Masako (born 1964), Nobuko (born 1961), and Akiko (born 1959).
