Americans for UNFPA

Americans for UNFPA identifies itself as an organization which "supports the health and dignity of women everywhere." This U.S. based NGO was formed in 1998 (as "The U.S. Committee for the United Nations Population Fund") to raise moral, political and financial support in within the United States for the work of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Americans for UNFPA is currently engaged in an advocacy effort to change the Bush Administration's policy of blocking U.S. funding of UNFPA. In addition to fighting for the release of the nearly $200 million in government support that has been withheld since 2002, Americans for UNFPA also raises money directly for UNFPA programs worldwide.

UNFPA provides women's health care and promotes the rights of women in more than 140 countries around the world, making it the largest multilateral source of such assistance. UNFPA's support of women's health care includes family planning, maternal health and HIV prevention programs. Additionally, UNFPA programs prevent gender-based violence and promote girls' access to education.

Americans for UNFPA believes that One Woman Can make a difference for women everywhere. Every woman, no matter what her status can do something to help ensure the health and dignity of women. Wherever a woman lives, whatever her economic status, whether she is a giver or a receiver of help, she can take some action, large or small, on behalf of UNFPA and women everywhere.

Americans for UNFPA is headquartered in New York, with offices in Washington DC and Seattle. Its President is Anika Rahman, a long-time advocate for global Reproductive rights and Women's Rights.
