October 1 ,1988 and was ordained an apostle onOctober 6 ,1988 following the death ofMarion G. Romney . As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, Scott is accepted by the church as aprophet, seer, and revelator .In 2007, Scott wrote "Finding Peace, Happiness and Joy", his first book written as an apostle. It carries on many themes from his talks such as repentance and finding happiness through the
atonement ofJesus Christ .Previous to being an apostle, Scott was a
nuclear engineer who did advanced studies atOak Ridge National Laboratory for theUnited States Department of Energy and later worked inNaval Reactors forHyman G. Rickover . He studied atGeorge Washington University .Born in
Pocatello, Idaho , Scott grew up inWashington, D.C. , served a mission toUruguay as a young man, and later returned toSouth America to serve as president of theArgentina North Mission of the church.ee also
