Atfih

Atfih

Atfih is a city in Middle Egypt, in the Al Jizah Governorate. Its population numbered 106,300 in 2001. The name is derived from Ancient Egyptian "Tpyhwt", meaning "the first of the cows", referring to Hathor. The name became "Petpeh" in Coptic, from which is derived the Arabic version "Atfih" ( _ar. أطفيح). The city was also known in Greco-Roman Egypt as Aphroditopolis. The city is located at the coordinates coord|29|25|00|N|31|15|00|E|type:landmark, in the area of ancient Maten, Upper Egypt's lowest nome.

Some of the Ancient Egyptian monuments discovered in Atfih include an animal necropolis, Greco-Roman tombs, and sepulchers of cows in huge limestone tombs.
