Applied Data Research (ADR) was a large
software vendor from the1960 s until the mid1980 s, and is "often described as "the first software vendor".ADR was originally a contract development company which built a series of products, which the became widely used: major packages included "AUTOFLOW", "ROSCOE", and "LIBRARIAN". ADR later purchased the
database management system DATACOM/DB , and developed the companion product "IDEAL", afourth generation programming language .ADR instigated litigation against IBM with accusations that IBM was "monopolizing the software industry", leading to IBM's famous unbundling of software and services in 1969. ADR in 1970 for $2 million.
ADR was eventually sold to
Ameritech , then later toComputer Associates .References
