|"The Orbital" is the official student publication of
SURHUL . It contains a range of subjects covering student life, culture, entertainment and current affairs. It attempts to strike a balance between serious topics and light-hearted features.Published by the Students' Union, the magazine releases 14 fortnightly issues per academic year. It is produced entirely by students with any student being able to contribute. The magazine generally observes an autonomous operation and advocates freedom of speech, with the final output being constitutionally supervised by the Students' Union, through the Sabbatical Officer for Communications & Services.
The Board
"The Orbital" board is lead by an Editor and a Deputy Editor. These positions are elected annually via a campus-wide election in which all 8000+ students are allowed to vote. A Sabbatical Officer of the Students' Union, the Vice President (Communications & Services), is ultimately responsible for the strategic direction of the publication, as well as for ensuring the legality of "The Orbital", and acts as the 'Editor-in-Chief'.
The Sub-Board consists of the following:
*Publishing Director
*Art Director
*Chief Sub-Editor
*Associate Editor for Society (News, Opinions, Features, Sports & Societies)
*Associate Editor for Culture (Art, Poetry, Books, Fashion, Travel)

Royal Holloway's official student publication was originally launched as a newspaper called "The Egham Sun" in 1986. In the early 1990s it was converted into a magazine format and renamed "The Orbital" after the nearby
M25 motorway . The magazine developed into an A4 glossy magazine in the late 1990s before transforming into a B5 glossy monthly publication in 2005 with a new logo and style. In 2007 it evolved into a 40 page full colour quarterfold magazine printed on newspaper paper. It is distributed across the campus on a fortnightly basis.Back issues can be found online at [http://www.surhul.co.uk/orbital]
