Corinthians (band)

Corinthians (band)

Corinthians were a rock/pop group from Wigan, England, consisting of Dan Thomas (guitar/keyboard/vocals), Thom Tyrer (bass/guitar/vocals), Adam Owens (drums) & Ben Gaskell (guitar). They formed as a trio without Gaskell in late 2004, and after adding Gaskell in late 2005, they disbanded as a quartet in June 2006 owing to personal differences.

History

The band began when Thomas (ex-The John Birch Society) met Owens (ex-Gigantic Monkey, The Corpse) on a bus home from Thomas' job at HMP/YOI Hindley. They added bassist Tyrer (ex-Odd One Out, The Vaccines) shortly thereafter and debuted in support of Death Sentence: PANDA! in May 2004. Early shows saw the band experimenting with noise and avant-garde structure, but soon settled into an abrasive, noisy pop style. They soon signed to fledgling label The Bloodloss Collective, who issued their first single (a split with Leeds pop outfit Cowtown) - 'Untitled/I Though You Liked Music' - which sold out of its limited run of 200 almost immediately, including a low-run release in Japan.

Later in 2005, the trio expanded to a quartet when they added Ben Gaskell (ex-Bushack, The Outsiders) to the ranks. The band continued with the high-profile support slots and headed into the studio to record their second AA-single, the thematic 'You Can/We Can' featuring 'You Can Be A Winner' and 'We Can Find A Market' for that. Both songs featured increasing amounts of melody and vocals that were intelligible, and sung rather than shouted - and even harmonies.

The band suddenly broke up in the summer of 2006 owing to a personal dispute. They issued a self-released posthumous album, including all the singles, outtakes from the sessions, instrumentals, a live radio interview and live tracks from their first gig and biggest gig, in front of 3000 at Haigh Hall in Wigan.
