The Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research (Donnelly CCBR) creates a unique organization in which research investigators from the [http://www.facmed.utoronto.ca/scripts/index_.asp Faculty of Medicine] , the [http://www.pharmacy.utoronto.ca/ Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy] , and the [http://www.engineering.utoronto.ca/site8.aspx Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering] at the University of Toronto have been brought together. The Donnelly CCBR seeks out faculty working in three general research platforms, Bioengineering and Functional Imaging, Integrative Biology and Models of Disease.
The building, at the St George Campus of the University of Toronto, is a state-of-the-art research facility consisting of approximately 20,550 gross square metres [gsm] / 221,120 square feet Laboratory and teaching facilities on 10 open concept floors. The building houses about 400 diverse research specialists, including molecular and developmental biologists, geneticists, computer scientists, chemists and bioengineers.
The building received the 2006 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Award and the 2006 Ontario Association of Architects Award of Excellence.
The building cost approximately $105 million to build, a large portion of the costs were donated by philanthopist and lawyer, Terrence Donnelly. Other funding sources include the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Government of Ontario, Ontario Innovation Trust, University Infrastructure Investment Fund I’Anson Fund and private donations from University of Toronto alumni.
