Thaddeus Michael Machrowicz (
August 21 ,1899 -February 17 ,1970 ) was a politician and judge from theU.S. state ofMichigan .Machrowicz was born in
Gostyń ,Poland and immigrated to theUnited States with his parents in 1902. They settled inChicago, Illinois , but later moved toMilwaukee, Wisconsin where he attended parochial school. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1910. He attendedAlliance College , inCambridge Springs, Pennsylvania , from 1912 to 1916. In 1917 he enrolled and took classes at theUniversity of Chicago .During
World War I , Machrowicz served as alieutenant in thePolish Army of American Volunteers inCanada ,France , andPoland from 1917 to 1920. He served with theAmerican Advisory Commission to the Polish Government from 1920 to 1921 and had also acted aswar correspondent withFloyd Gibbons in Poland, 1919-1921.He attended
De Paul University in 1921 and graduated from theDetroit College of Law in 1924. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1924 and commenced practice in Detroit. He served as city attorney ofHamtramck, Michigan from 1934 to 1936, and legal director ofMichigan Public Utilities Commission in 1938 and 1939. He was appointedmunicipal judge in Hamtramck, serving from 1942 to 1950.In 1950, Machrowicz defeated incumbent Democrat
George G. Sadowski in the Democratic Party primary election and went on to be elected to representMichigan's 1st congressional district in the82nd United States Congress . He was re-elected to the five succeeding Congresses, serving fromJanuary 3 ,1951 toSeptember 18 ,1961 . He was a delegate to theDemocratic National Convention from Michigan in 1952, 1956, and 1960. He resigned from office, having been appointed a judge of theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and served until his death.Thaddeus M. Machrowicz died in Bloomfield Township and was interred in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
