Thaddeus M. Machrowicz

Thaddeus Michael Machrowicz (August 21, 1899 - February 17, 1970) was a politician and judge from the U.S. state of Michigan.

Machrowicz was born in Gostyń, Poland and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1902. They settled in Chicago, Illinois, but later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he attended parochial school. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1910. He attended Alliance College, in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, from 1912 to 1916. In 1917 he enrolled and took classes at the University of Chicago.

During World War I, Machrowicz served as a lieutenant in the Polish Army of American Volunteers in Canada, France, and Poland from 1917 to 1920. He served with the American Advisory Commission to the Polish Government from 1920 to 1921 and had also acted as war correspondent with Floyd Gibbons in Poland, 1919-1921.

He attended De Paul University in 1921 and graduated from the Detroit College of Law in 1924. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1924 and commenced practice in Detroit. He served as city attorney of Hamtramck, Michigan from 1934 to 1936, and legal director of Michigan Public Utilities Commission in 1938 and 1939. He was appointed municipal judge in Hamtramck, serving from 1942 to 1950.

In 1950, Machrowicz defeated incumbent Democrat George G. Sadowski in the Democratic Party primary election and went on to be elected to represent Michigan's 1st congressional district in the 82nd United States Congress. He was re-elected to the five succeeding Congresses, serving from January 3, 1951 to September 18, 1961. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Michigan in 1952, 1956, and 1960. He resigned from office, having been appointed a judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and served until his death.

Thaddeus M. Machrowicz died in Bloomfield Township and was interred in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
