The plot is based on the mythology surrounding the title characters: Dobrynya Nikitich and Zmey Gorynych. The film contains many elements of parody and jokes about The Matrix, Star Wars, The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed, Morozko, The Flying Ship and other famous movies.
