Alexander Skutch

Doctor Alexander Frank Skutch (May 20, 1904May 12, 2004) was a naturalist writer. He published countless scientific papers and books about birds, which were his passion. He also wrote a several books on philosophy.

Biography

Alexander Skutch was born on May 20, 1904 in Baltimore, Maryland. He received a Doctorate in Botany from Johns Hopkins University. He then traveled to Panama and Honduras, where he studied bananas. During this time he acquired a deep interest in birds and began studying their habits.

Skutch collected plants to make money, but observing birds remained his life’s main focus. In 1941, he purchased a farm in Costa Rica, where he lived for the rest of his life. Alexander Skutch died on May 12, 2004, one week before his 100th birthday and in the same year he received the Loye and Alden Miller Research Award.
