Enoch Hood

Enoch Hood

Enoch Hood (1861 - 1940) was a founder member of Port Vale Football Club (1876) and was the first recorded team captain (1879). He was born in Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent, England on 10 January 1861.

His usual playing position was right-wing. He was a regular member of the team until November 1884. Thereafter he played occasionally until April 1885 and then became a lifelong supporter.

Enoch Hood was a lay preacher and member of the Burslem Brotherhood (a Christian social group - reference required). He was a highly respected member of the community and his granddaughter, Edna Lamb, had many recollections of his work for charity, including collecting funds to kit out the local brass band for Christmas performances. At least one of his brothers also played for Port Vale (reference required).

He died in May Bank, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, on 6 February 1940.
