She is currently ranked 49 in singles and 22 in doubles.She is of Italian descent through her father, and Irish through her mother. [Irish Times, 25 June 2008]
Early life
Casey attended Woodvale Primary School from kindergarten all the way up to year 7 then attended Woodvale Senior High School until she was sixteen before moving to
Canberra to train with theAustralian Institute of Sport .She was an active member of local tennis clubs and teams.Greatest achievements
Her highest rankings to this point are 41 in singles (achieved on June 9, 2008) after a third round showing at the French Open and 35 in doubles (June 23, 2008) after reaching the French Open Final! She has 11 ITF singles titles and 13 ITF doubles titles to her name. After reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open, she became the number one female tennis player in Australia.
At the
2008 Australian Open , Dellacqua defeated former world No.1Amelie Mauresmo to reach the fourth round, her best result in a Grand Slam event. She has also achieved notable victories over former top 10 playersAlicia Molik ,Nicole Vaidisova ,Patty Schnyder andMarion Bartoli .She reached her first WTA Tour Quarter-Final in Hobart in 2008, before losing to Greek
Eleni Danilidou .Partnering
Francesca Schiavone , Dellacqua was the finalist in the Women's Doubles competition at the 2008French Open .PartneringNatalie Dechy , Dellacqua made the semi-finals in the Women's event of the 2008 Wimbledon Championships.2006
Dellacqua played in the Australian Open as a wild-card, with
Lindsay Davenport as her first-round opponent. However, she was soundly beaten by Davenport, receiving much criticism after the match for her lack of fitness.2007
Dellacqua entered the
2007 Australian Open , again as a wildcard, but was beaten by SlovenianKatarina Srebotnik in the first round. She failed to make it past the first round in both theFrench Open and theWimbledon Championships (however she did manage to win through qualifying).Dellacqua reached the second round of the US Open when she defeatedYaroslava Shvedova in straight sets. However she was then beaten handily in straight sets byMaria Sharapova .2008
Dellacqua began the year well by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and upset major opponents like 15th seed
Patty Schnyder and former champion and world number oneAmelie Mauresmo but eventually lost to third seedJelena Jankovic . The performance meant she surpassedAlicia Molik to become the highest ranked Australian female tennis player.The
French Open again showed Dellacqua's improved ability as she defeated the 9th seedMarion Bartoli andNathalie Dechy in the first two rounds but she was knocked out in straights sets byCarla Suarez Navarro in the third round. The doubles proved to be a highlight for Casey as she teamed with ItalianFrancesca Schiavone to reach the final despite being unseeded. The pair lost to spaniardsAnabel Medina Garrigues andVirginia Ruano Pascual , 2-6 7-5 6-4 in a match that lasted two-and-a-half hours.For the first round of the
2008 Wimbledon Championships Casey faced the 12th seed SwissPatty Schnyder , who she had already beaten earlier this year in the second round of TheAustralian Open . Although she lost the first set to her again, Dellacqua had a convincing win against Schnyder 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In Caseys second round match against French playerPauline Parmentier , Dellacqua won during a tight match. It looked an easy win for Parmentier, but Casey pulled through winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Casey facedNicole Vaidisova ,in the 3rd round, but unfortunely lost the match 6-2, 6-4 to Vaidosova.In the Women's Doubles Event, Casey partnered with
Nathalie Dechy of France who she already partnered with at the2008 International Women's Open atEastbourne . They started well deafeating Great Britain's wildcardsAnna Fitzpatrick andAnna Elizabeth Hawkins 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. They had an easy second round match easily beatingTatiana Perebiynis andAlicja Rosolska 6-3, 6-2. They won their Third Round match after beating American qualifiersRaquel Kops-Jones andAbigail Spears 6-4, 7-6(9). They won a tight Quarter- Finals match against SpaniansNuria Llagostera Vives andMaria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2, 7-6(6), 6-4. Their great Wimbledon run ended when they lost toVenus Williams andSerena Williams in straight sets 3-6, 3-6.In the Mixed Doubles Event, Casey partnered with AmericanScott Lipsky . Dellacqua and Lipsky got through their first round after winning in three sets againstMarta Domachowska andFernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. In the second round they upset 7th seedsMark Knowles and Zi Yan again in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. They eventually lost to 9th seedsAndy Ram andNathalie Dechy At the 2008 Beijing Olympics Casey represented Australia in the singles event along with
Alicia Molik andSamantha Stosur . Casey had an easy first round match againstGisela Dulko 6-3 6-4. In the second round she was against 12th seedVictoria Azarenka , but the Belarusian was to good beating her 2-6 2-6. In the Doubles event Casey partnered with fellow Australian Molik. In their first round match, they were against the Italian team ofFlavia Pennetta andFrancesca Schiavone They unfortunatley lost 4-6 4-6.Casey had a bad start at the U.S. Open after losing both of her first round matches in the singles event and the doubles event. In the singles she was beaten by a French qualifier
Julie Coin 6–7, 6–7. In the doubles event, Casey entered the competition seeded 9th withNathalie Dechy , one of the defending champions of the event. They lost toKlaudia Jans andAlicja Rosolska of Poland 6–1, 2–6, 3–6. In the mixed doubles event she played alongside fellow AustralianJordan Kerr .
