Romana Kryzanowska

Romana Kryzanowska is a protégé of Joseph Pilates and has been teaching the method for nearly six decades. Romana was introduced to Joseph Pilates in 1941, when George Balanchine treated her because of an ankle injury. Romana quickly noticed not only an improvement in her ankle, but an overall improvement in her dancing. Romana worked under the direct supervision of her mentors Joseph and Clara Pilates until July 1944, when she got married and went to live in Peru until 1958. During Romana's time in Peru she did not stop teaching. She kept in touch with Joseph and Clara and continued to teach her son Paul Mejia and daughter Sari Mejia Santo in Peru to help them become strong and flexible dancers.

Romana continued to work closely and extensively with Joseph Pilates learning the method until his death in 1968. She then continued working with Clara Pilates for another 11 years until her death in 1979. Romana made a commitment to Joe and Clara Pilates to continue their life's work and at 80+ she continues to deliver on that promise today by traveling the world and teaching the next generation of True Pilates instructors. Romana is acknowledged by many instructors as being their teacher and mentor in the True Pilates method; she is responsible for training most of the leading Pilates instructors working today.

Romana is currently a Principal Officer in a company named Romana's Pilates, which she operates jointly with both her daughter and granddaughter (Daria Pace).
