James A. Berlin (
1942 -1994 ) was a theorist in the field ofcomposition studies whose work typically takes historical andrhetoric al perspectives. AMarxist philosophy also informs his scholarship. He earned hisPh.D. from theUniversity of Michigan inVictorian literature in 1975. He served as a professor of English atWichita State University , at theUniversity of Cincinnati , where he directed first-year English from 1981-85, and atPurdue University from 1987-1994. Between Cincinnati and Purdue, Berlin served as visiting professor at theUniversity of Texas and atPenn State University .Works
