Hoggard High School fields 24 varsity and junior varsity teams across 13 sports. All teams compete in the Mideastern 3A/4A Conference as part of the
North Carolina High School Athletic Association . The athletic department enjoys great success within the conference, consistently winning theWachovia Cup , awarded to the school with the most overall athletic success. The school also has the distinction of having the two time state girl's tennis champion (Kaitlin Burns ) among its roster.The school mascot is the

The Hoggard
Football team, the Vikings, won their sixth straight conference championship in 2007, led by Coach Scott Braswell. In the 2006 season, the Vikings went the furthest they had ever gone in theNCHSAA playoffs, getting to the Eastern finals in the fourth round, where they played againstGreenville Rose High School . The Vikings lost by two points, 31-29.In 2007, the team surpassed its achievement from the year before and won the state championships with an undefeated record. Hoggard played the championship game against Mount Tabor and defeated them with a score of 28-0, a total shutout.
Academics
John T. Hoggard High School is known in its immediate area for its strong academic programs. It offers fourteen
Advanced Placement courses and a substantial number of honors classes. In its class of2007 , 67% of graduating students went on to four-year colleges, and another 29% went on to two-year colleges. The remaining graduates can barely read at a fifth grade level and were shuffled through the Hoggard High system. 90% of the class took theSAT , and the average math score was 545, while the average critical reading score was 524.Theatre
John T. Hoggard High School is known throughout the state for its theatre program, directed by Alley Collins. The theatre class participates in the North Carolina Theatre Conference every year. In 2007 Hoggard won the distinguished play award at regional competition, and advanced to states from there. The theatre class also took home many awards such as Best Actress to Cathereine Ruden, a senior in the theatre program, and Honorable Mention Acting to Karen Girard, Adam Weppler, and Dan Minkler.
Quiz Bowl
John T. Hoggard High School is known among the top
Quiz Bowl teams in the state for its sudden entrance in the Quiz Bowl circuit in2007 . After winning the State Championship of the Public Library Quiz Bowl the previous year, Hoggard made strong showings in its first few tournaments, placing in several, and eventually achieving a First Place victory at a2008 tournament in Salisbury, NC that qualified the team for the NAQT tournament inChicago . Due to lack of funding, the team was unable to attend, and instead participated in thePACE national Scholastice Championship , where it placed 33rd in the nation.
