The school also has the distinction of having the two time state girl's tennis champion (Kaitlin Burns) among its roster.

The school mascot is the Viking, and the primary colors are blue and white.

Football

The Hoggard Football team, the Vikings, won their sixth straight conference championship in 2007, led by Coach Scott Braswell. In the 2006 season, the Vikings went the furthest they had ever gone in the NCHSAA playoffs, getting to the Eastern finals in the fourth round, where they played against Greenville Rose High School. The Vikings lost by two points, 31-29.

In 2007, the team surpassed its achievement from the year before and won the state championships with an undefeated record. Hoggard played the championship game against Mount Tabor and defeated them with a score of 28-0, a total shutout.

John T. Hoggard High School is known among the top Quiz Bowl teams in the state for its sudden entrance in the Quiz Bowl circuit in 2007. After winning the State Championship of the Public Library Quiz Bowl the previous year, Hoggard made strong showings in its first few tournaments, placing in several, and eventually achieving a First Place victory at a 2008 tournament in Salisbury, NC that qualified the team for the NAQT tournament in Chicago. Due to lack of funding, the team was unable to attend, and instead participated in the PACE national Scholastice Championship, where it placed 33rd in the nation.
