Herbert de Losinga (born at the village of Exmes, near Argentan, Normandy, died 1119) was the first Bishop of Norwich. He founded Norwich Cathedral in 1096 when he was Bishop of Thetford.

Life

Herbert was the son of Robert de Losinga. The name is believed to be a corruption of Lotharingia, or Lorraine. He was abbot of Ramsey Abbey before he was selected to be bishop. He was consecrated Bishop of Thetford in 1090 or 1091. He moved the diocese from Thetford to Norwich in 1094 or 1095, becoming the first Bishop of Norwich.Powicke "Handbook of British Chronology" p. 223] He was probably consecrated at the same time as Ralph Luffa, Bishop of Chichester. He was not consistently called Bishop of Norwich until about 1103.

He was responsible for founding St Margaret's Church in King's Lynn, the Church of St Nicholas in Great Yarmouth, and Norwich School.

He died on July 22 1119.
