Velvary (IPA2|ˈvɛlvarɪ) is a small
town in theCentral Bohemian Region of theCzech Republic . It is located 25 km northwest ofPrague and has a population of 2,936 (2006). The town, first mentioned in1282 , was for centuries an important stop on the way from Prague toSaxony .Sights
The major sights of the spacious King Vladislav Square include a
Baroque plague column (1716-1719), a Baroquetown hall (1717) and the Gothic St Catherine church withmural s from the 15th century. TheRenaissance Prague Gate (1580) is the last preserved of three town gates. There is also a valuable Renaissance St George church (1613 - 1616) with a churchyard.Famous people
