Doug Isaacson

Douglas W. Isaacson, (Doug Isaacson), (born October 18, 1957) was elected mayor of North Pole, Alaska in October 2006. Mr. Isaacson is also president of Gold Coast Mortgage, a mortgage company located in nearby Fairbanks, Alaska. He is the father of five children whose ages range from 23 to 14 (as of 2007).

Born in Seattle, Washington, raised in Edmonds, Washington, and a 1975 graduate of King's Garden High School, Doug Isaacson first came to Alaska as a Russian linguist on a temporary duty assignment with the US Air Force in 1977. Two years later, in April 1979, he was transferred to the now defunct 6985th ESC Squadron at Eielson Air Force Base and served there until his honorable discharge in December 1981.

Doug Isaacson earned a B.A. in linguistics from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1984, and Masters of Divinity from Western Seminary, Portland, Oregon, in 1989. He has been active in business and politics in Alaska since 1984. He has been in the credit and finance industry since 1991. From 1991-1995, he developed the Trans Union data base and a Mortgage Reporting Service (MRSI) in Alaska--he even travelled to the Russian Far East and spoke with Banking officials to assess the possibility of developing credit bureau files there. In 1992 he was the Founding Chairman of the Board of the International Credit Association, Fairbanks Chapter. In 1996 he went to work for City Mortgage, at that time the largest mortgage company in Alaska, and became the Fairbanks Branch Manager. He opened Gold Coast Mortgage in 2001. He was President of the Alaska Association of Mortgage Brokers (AKAMB) from 2005 - 2006 and helped draft the legislation licensing Mortgage Originators, Lenders, and Brokers in Alaska. He currently serves as Vice President of the AKAMB and represents the industry on the Delegate Council of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB). He is a NAMB Silver Medallion Member.

Among Doug Isaacson's numerous involvements, he served two terms (six years) on the North Pole City Council (2000-2006), was president of the Alaska Association of Mortgage Brokers (2005-2006), was a delegate to the 2004 Republican National Convention, chaired the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee from 1996 until it was successfully merged with the Fairbanks Industrial Development Corp, creating the Fairbanks Economic Development Corporation in 2003. He served on the Member Advisory Committee for the local electric cooperative, Golden Valley Electric Association, currently serves on the board of Priscilla Acquilla Lighthouse Ministries, a local nonprofit agency dedicated to helping local area families, and is a teaching elder at North Pole Worship Center.

Among the highlights of his first year as Mayor, Isaacson successfully brought the community together in celebrations on July 4th and on Labor Day; he initiated the first ever Community Workshop to vision land-use and thematic developments to the City; and his administration may well bring the world-renown "Ice Alaska" (World Ice Art Championships) ice art carvings to the North Pole for the first ever "North Pole Christmas In Ice" competition from the second weekend in December to New Year's Day, featuring ice carvers from as far away as the People's Republic of China.
