Jew's Court

Jew's Court

Jew's Court is a Norman building on Steep Hill in Lincoln, immediately above Jew's House.

Sometimes dated from the late twelfth century, the building is often thought to have been used as a synagogue until the expulsion the entire Jewish community from England in 1290. A cabinet marked with Stars of David and currently used as an ark may date from this period. Other experts claim a later date and do not accept that the building was a synagogue. In 1910, a well was dug in the basement of the building, and owner subsequently claimed that this was where the body of Little Saint Hugh of Lincoln had been found.

In 1992, Jewish services were restarted in the building, the remainder of which operates as a bookshop.
