Pere Portabella

Pere Portabella i Ràfols (born 11 November, 1929 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) is a Catalan experimental filmmaker, artist and politician.

Career as a Filmmaker

He first achieved notoriety as the producer of Luis Buñuel's "Viridiana"; his connection with the controversial film caused him trouble with the Francoist government, which eventually lead to his passport being taken away.

Portabella has completed 10 features to date, the most recent being 2007's "Die Stille vor Bach". He frequently collaborates with composer Carles Santos.

Political career

Portabella was elected as a senator [ [http://pereportabella.com/eng/bio_esp.html PerePortabella.com: Biography] ] during Spain's first democratic elections in 1977 and participated in the writing of the Spanish Constitution. He has also been a member of the Parliament of Catalonia.
