The company focuses on science, political science, European and Asian studies, and security studies.[1] It was founded in 1985 in New York by Frank Columbus, former Vice-President of Plenum Publishing. On his death in 2010 at age 69, his wife Nadya Columbus became the editor-in-chief.[2]
The publisher has been criticized for republishing public domain material in their journals (often chapters taken from early 20th century non-scholarly books) and for so-called "cross publication," where the same paper is republished in more than one collection.[3] In an evaluation of twenty-one international social-science book publishers that attempted to determine the market penetration of publishers in influencing policy level bureaucrats, Nova Publishers ranked 17th out of 21 publishers.[4]
