History

Jet2.com is a subsidiary of the Dart Group PLC, an aviation services and distribution group. The airline has been operating commercial aircraft since 1978, originally under the name Channel Express (Air Services), primarily a freight operator but since 2001 operating both freight and passenger charter services.

Jet2.com was established as a low-cost airline subsidiary of Channel Express in 2002 and started operations on 12 February 2003 at Leeds Bradford International Airport using Boeing 737-300 aircraft on services to Amsterdam. During 2003 the airline expanded routes to six further European destinations.

In 2006 the operational headquarters of Channel Express were moved from Bournemouth to Leeds and the company was renamed Jet2.com Limited [ [http://wck2.companieshouse.gov.uk/b5eb00126cd2a251a7e4256abf67587c/compdetails Companies House - English Company 02739537] ] using the brand name Jet2.com. Although re-branded Jet2.com it still operates the contract charter and freight flights which were formerly operated under the Channel Express name.

The airline opened a second base at Manchester Airport in December 2004. Subsequently bases have been opened at Belfast International Airport, Newcastle Airport, Edinburgh Airport and Blackpool Airport. After adding additional Boeing 737-300s these were supplemented in 2005 with the addition of larger Boeing 757-200s.

Like other low-cost carriers, Jet2.com tickets may only be booked over the internet or by telephone.

The airline carried 600,000 passengers in 2003, its first year of operation, and 3.8 million passengers on over 34,000 flights in 2007.

The Dart Group also has a separate division, Jet2holidays.com, offering package holidays which incorporate Jet2.com flights with private taxi transfers and hotel accommodation. Package holidays are offered from all six UK bases to destinations such as Spain, the Canary Islands and Crete in Greece from May 2008.

On 8 May 2008 the company announced a series of four direct flights from Leeds Bradford to New York Newark Airport, during November and December 2008. The service will be available through Jet2holidays.com as a package or on a seat only basis. [ [http://www.jet2.com/News.aspx?id=439 Jet2.com Press Release - Newark Flights] ]
