Kitakanbara District, Niigata

Kitakanbara (北蒲原郡; -gun) is a district located in Niigata, Japan.

The town of Shibata become a city on January 1, 1947. After Shibata gained the city status, Shibata and Niigata merged the surrounding areas and the district continues to lose more areas. The town of Toyosaka (part of Niigata as of March 21, 2005) become a city on November 1, 1970. On July 7, 2003, the town of Toyoura merged into the city of Shibata. On April 1, 2004, the municipalities of Yasuda, Suibara, Kyogase, and Sasakami merged to create the city of Agano. The municipalities of Kajikawa and Shiunji merged into the city of Shibata on May 1, 2005. On September, 1, 2005, the municipalities of Kurokawa and Nakajo merged to form the city of Tainai, which will leave the town of Seiro independent within Kitakanbara District.

As of April 1, 2005, the district has an estimated population of 13,528. The total area is 37.99 km².
