Peebo

Peebo

Peebo is a nickname for the City of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, England. Its use came about following a suggestion by a listener to the Peterborough breakfast show on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, which is presented by Andy Burrows. Mr Burrows is known for his view that Peterborough is not as well recognised around the UK as it deserves to be. In November 2006, Mr Burrows further complained that Peterborough was not shown on the British Isles maps published in many diaries. One listener suggested that this may have been because the name Peterborough contains too many letters, making it impossible to fit into a small space. Another listener, Norman from Werrington, proposed that the city might benefit from adopting a shorter nickname, offering the name Peebo as a possibility.

Mr Burrows took up the idea, and further suggested that an 'I Love Peebo' campaign might be started. He proposed that stickers should be produced which would be fixed to commercial vehicles originating from Peterborough. When the stickers were spotted by people in other parts of the country, they would be inclined to wonder what Peebo was, and would be directed to a website where they could learn more about the city.

On 30 November 2006, the Chief Executive of Peterborough City Council, Gillian Beasley, appeared on Mr Burrows' radio programme to declare her administration's support for the campaign.

Stewart Jackson MP, who represents the Peterborough constituency in the House of Commons, spoke about the campaign on Mr Burrows' programme on 04 December 2006, promising to raise awareness of it in Parliament once the website has attracted a large number of hits.

The website was created by e-Man in partnership with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. The co-founders of e-Man are Matthew Hagger and Eugene Kouumdjieff; both believe that Peterborough has much to offer and decided to devote resources to the development of a community website for the Peebo campaign.
