Karl Benz followed his successful three-wheeled Patent Motorwagen—which was patented as the first commercially available automobile onJanuary 29 ,1886 and put into production from 1886 through 1893—with the four-wheeled Benz Velo model of 1894. The Benz Velo and theDuryea Motor Wagon , patented in 1895, are credited as the first standardized cars—134 identical Benz Velos were built in 1895.The Velo also inspired numerous copies, including
