He played his first professional game for
Unión de Santa Fe in 1986. In 1988 he moved to San Lorenzo de Almagro, a club he would play for in four spells during his career.He also played for Boca Juniors in Argentina, Toulouse in
France , Universidad Católica inChile ,Yokohama F. Marinos inJapan and Sporting Portugal inPortugal . He was one of the keys for Sporting's title in the 1999–2000 season (which failed to come to Alvalade for 18 years) and is still cherished and fondly remembered among fans.Honours
Acosta was top scorer several times in different competitions, he also won several national and international tournaments.
